Photobook Proposal: An Gi Chua?

  • At the Heart of It

An gi chua? (“Have you eaten yet?”) is a photographic exploration of home, nourishment, and care within Vietnamese families living in the UK. Food, in this context, is never just food—it is memory, culture, affection, and connection, all woven together at the dining table.

  • My Place in This Story

In this project, I enter the homes of Vietnamese families across the UK, not only as a photographer but as a guest, sharing meals and stories. My perspective is both insider and outsider : deeply connected to Vietnamese traditions, yet shaped by the distance and adaptation of living abroad.

  • What I Hope to Capture

Through intimate images and stories, this project documents not only the meals themselves but also the gestures, conversations, and small details that embody care. It is about how Vietnamese traditions are carried, adapted, and kept alive far from home—through everyday rituals of cooking and eating together.

This book is my way of answering questions I’ve been asking myself as I grow into photography: How do I express the Vietnamese part of me, here, far from home? What feels like love? What feels like care?

  • Themes & Significance

Food becomes a language of care, as Vietnamese families adapt traditions in the UK. These moments carry both comfort and longing, and it’s that mix of feelings I want this book to hold.

  • Text & Narrative

Alongside photographs, short reflections will provide personal and cultural context. These texts will read like intimate notes—diary-like, warm, and conversational, creating a layered reading experience where visuals and words echo each other.

  • Why This Project Matters to Me

Because food is what feels like home. An Gi Chua? is not only about documenting Vietnamese families in the UK—it’s also about my own search for belonging, told through the meals that continue to shape who I am.
